Kinja'd!!!

Only got 4 runs on the new brakes before I had a valve stem pop . Didn’t even get a chance to figure out how to use the new super grippy brakes.

Wait, the stem itself cracked?  I don’t think I’ve heard of that one before in autocross!  That stinks!

Yup. Second time one has cracked on me. First time was 2 years ago parked at work. I think it might have had something to do with it being almost 100F. I think this was more due to the heat than the autocrossing.

eh.... if its the second stem in the same wheel you might wanna have that wheel checked out... might have a stem destroying issue... like a jagged edge on the hole for the stem

or it could just be a coinkadink

Different wheel. It was one of the left sides the first time.

Phew. For a moment there I thought you were talking about an intake or exhaust valve. I’m so glad it’s a much more obvious type of valve stem that failed.

It would seem that everything is still where it should be for now. Hoods just open because the Mini has a hot little engine and can overheat  if you just park it after beating on it.

Yeah crawling through caffeine and octane after an 80 mile cruise at 70 mph really overheated my engine

Mines fine as long as it is running. It’s just parking it and shutting it off after beating on it that can cause the temp to drift up quite a bit. I believe it runs off the idea of a small amount of coolant in the engine at one time pumped quickly meaning that when you stop the pump it heats up that small amount of coolant. First autocross I went to I parked it after my first runs with the gauge right in the middle and started it again after 20 minutes to find the gauge at 3/4ths.

Opening the hood allows air to flow out the top of the engine bay, limiting the heat soak. When you stand in front of it after a few runs you can feel the hot air rising out of the engine bay.

I do. At least if I got a real flat I would have an excuse to buy some sticky tires.

Wow, I know where that is. I use to work inside those doors.

It's nice that lot is actually being used for something good.

It’s a pretty good location. The mall is quite dead these days though, there can’t be more than 10 open stores left.

Interesting about the overheating—my R56 keeps running something after you shut it off in hot weather. I think it’s oil circulation to cool the turbo.

When I first got it  I thrashed mine on a curvy mountain road near my sister-in-law’s and despite a little cool down drove on the way back it smelled like something was burning when I parked it. But that’s really never happened since.

The Escort i race on dirt tracks have the same, if you stop it right after going into the pits you can hear it starting to boil inside the head. needs to run with fans on and circulate coolant for a few minutes before it’s safe to stop. Also hood open and plenty of hot air pouring out :D
